2 Ways to Get to Know Who You Know - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Ready to take your networking to the next level of success? There are two practices that are the cornerstone to success in getting to know who you know: Use social media to earn a face to face meeting Thank them and follow-up Use social media to deepen the connection Use online and offline networking in tandem to develop and grow your connections. Relationship building is nurtured with time. The more time invested the more opportunity to get to know each other. Learning about each others goals, accomplishments, objectives and interests is a solid way to discover a common frame of reference and generate a stronger bond. Through social, online interactions you are provided the opportunity to share your common frames of reference and to also sample each others character and competence. Any of us can sound wonderful in short bursts and interactions. Its that continued interaction and consistency that develops a level of trust that will strengthen the connection with this person and thus develop your network. Who in your social network lists would you like to meet face to face? Who have you developed rapport and trust with already that you would like to spend some face to face time with? Use social to get to know their interests, what they value, who they are and who they influence or connect with, too. Ask yourself: Is this someone that you would like to know better? Do they value you and you them? Online networking provides you (and your connection) the opportunity to gain confidence in each other. And, used to augment you offline networking and relationship building it will help you in becoming more adept about communicating in different formats and provide the trust level needed to even know your contact better. If you use social site networking to build deeper relationships with fewer people, it will also develop your influence. Then, use face time to take your relationship to the next level. Thank them and follow up When someone has taken the time to take an online relationship and meet face to face, then do thank them. Even a simple handwritten note can go a long way in developing the relationship. Most importantly its time to follow-up on what you agreed to or promised in your face to face meeting? Or, even ways you can help. When you met face to face, they might have asked for something or you may have agreed to do or send something be sure to follow-through. You want to be trusted that what you say is what youll do. Also, when you meet take the time to really listen, to get to know them. The purpose of your face-to-face meeting is to deepen your relationship, to finally meet and to get to know each other. Its not to sell something. Spend most of your time listening and getting to know them. As you do that, there will be something thats on their mind. It could be a challenge or problem theyre trying to solve or it could be something they need assistance with. If you can help them or do something that would be helpful to something they value, that will exponentially accelerate the development of your relationship. For this week: Identify two people that are connections in one of your social sites and invite them for coffee, lunch or to meet face to face in an upcoming conference. Write a thank you note to someone you met face-to-face with in the last couple of weeks. Post when youve done that below. Are You Selling Yourself in Your Job Search - Hire Imaging A simple enough (and probably overused) phrase, âselling yourselfâ makes many job seekers squirm. In fact, it probably causes more unease than any other part of the job search. My client Bob told me, âI feel Iâm out there like a football game vendorâs hotdog on a tray.â Itâs not pleasant for folks to feel as though theyâre a product to be scrutinized, judged, raked over and despite best feet forward, rejected. The whole process is often belittling for many job seekers. George told me, âI hate pushing myself off on people. Itâs as though I have to wear a sign around my neck, yell and point, âHey, Iâm here! Look at me nowâ to get their attention.â Like George, quite a few job seekers feel that if they could just avoid having to sell themselves â" if people just came looking for them â" life would be good. Itâs much more dignified not to have to make a sales pitch. Itâs much less stressful on the mind and body to be pursued. Sure. But in a non-perfect world, you had better come to terms with selling yourself, because you will be in many situations where a job offer can depend upon how well you project your potential to an interested listener. Selling yourself may feel awkward at first, but it need not involve high-pressure tactics and can often occur in informal settings. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes. Breathe easy and dive in. You probably do it more than you know; you just donât call it selling. Keep your momentum Iâm going to assume that in your search, youâve done some leg work and due diligence. Youâve rolled up your sleeves before now and worked hard. Youâve probably been brainstorming options for what you want to do, researched to see where that might be, gone through a whole lot of weighing pros and cons, digging for information, finding people, researching jobs and companies, building a prospect list, and more. Youâve put a great deal of time and effort into this. Thatâs why the job search is called a job. Itâs work. So if youâve gotten yourself to windows of opportunities, why would you want to risk it all because youâre reluctant to sell yourself? Do you want to drop the ball now? Of course you donât. But thatâs what often happens if you donât sell. This is important. You have to be willing to tell people who you are and what you can do. They wonât know if you canât tell them. They wonât stop you at the market and say, âGee, Mary, itâs really you! Weve been looking for an accountant like you! Even when you work hard to get the interview, the interviewer will not look you straight in the eyes and say, âWow! Youâre just what weâve been looking for our perfect sales consultant!â When youâve gotten the interview (good for you!), you want to show them more than credentials. And give them more than stock answers that sound positive but mean lets face it not much. âIâm really good with people.â (Ted, my English Cocker, is good with people). âI really want this job.â (Of course you do or you shouldnât be there). âIâm a really hard worker.â (Did you think we wanted a lazy worker?) While these may be true statements, the interviewer has heard them a thousand times. Whatâs special about you? What sets you apart? What are you known for? And most importantly, how does it all fit with the job? What value are you going to give them in THIS JOB? So youâve done a lot of work to get to this point. You should pat yourself on the back for finding jobs that youâre qualified for. You got the interview. Donât lose your momentum now. Be prepared to talk about what they need (and Iâm assuming youâve done thorough research on the company beforehand), their pain, and how you can help. Use a 3-step process There are 3 things that anyone canâ"and should do to sell during the interview (and continued networking) phase. 1) Give them reasons to want you. 2) Tell them stories about yourself. 3) Hone and use your social skills.
